On October 20, 2022, KVC Health Systems held its Annual Celebration. KVC hosts this event every fall to share and celebrate the positive difference our generous supporters have made in people’s lives. KVC is a national leader in child welfare and mental health, with services like foster care, adoption, and children's mental health hospitals that serve nearly 60,000 people per year.

Adam is a father who struggled with substance use and addiction. He made some decisions that led to his two little boys entering foster care. He decided to do everything he could to change his life and bring his boys safely back home. Thanks to his KVC worker’s support and the KVC foster family caring for his boys, Adam and his children are now back together and thriving. Check out this incredible foster care success story. Robin was a teen in foster care with KVC in the early 2000s. While she went through many difficult experiences, her KVC case workers were a consistent support and encouragement in her life. She also was inspired by an adult in her life, a single mom who was a registered nurse. While only 3% of youth who age out of foster care go on to get a college degree, Robin decided she would defy these statistics and not be defined by them. She recently achieved her dream to become a registered nurse and is now helping others. Robin is an inspiration to youth in foster care today. We all experience times in our lives when we feel sad – that’s part of life. But when feelings of unhappiness grow so strong that they feel unmanageable or last for long periods, the person experiencing them might be struggling with depression. This can become a serious condition that interferes with a person’s ability to live their day-to-day life and may require professional treatment to stabilize and manage symptoms.

It can be difficult for a child or teen to understand and explain what they are feeling so caregivers need to pay close attention to their behaviors. Signs that a child is experiencing depression may include feelings of hopelessness, changes in eating or sleeping habits, avoiding activities they once enjoyed, and increased irritability or anger. Resilience is an important skill throughout life because it helps you cope with stress so you can respond in healthier ways. LGBTQIA+ youth are three times more likely than heterosexual youth to consider suicide. It is incredibly important for communities, schools, and families to be compassionate, inclusive, and engaging with all children and teens and especially those who are more at risk of experiencing mental health challenges. Millions of people in the U.S are affected by mental illness each year—including one in five adults and one in six children ages 6 to 17. Mental illness can have significant physical, social, and financial impacts on a person’s life, but when it comes to treatment, some people are more hesitant to consider taking a medication for mental illness. Dr. Jyotsna Adma, Associate Medical Director of Psychiatry Services for KVC Hospitals joined KSHB 41 News in Kansas City to provide education about the ways psychiatric medication can improve someone’s condition and address medication misconceptions.
