The grand opening of our Mental Wellness Campus in Olathe, KS, is here! In this video, we share the highlights of the ribbon-cutting event for Children’s Mercy + Camber Mental Health.

The new hospital will serve as an inpatient mental health healing campus, featuring 48 pediatric beds and 24 adult beds in fully separate units, six private courtyards, walking paths and dining and activity space. The design and healing environment are centered on patient and staff safety, supportive care and treatment spaces, patient wellness and connection with nature.

In recent years, some Kansas children in foster care have ended up sleeping in child welfare offices overnight because there were no foster homes or care centers available.

It’s not just Kansas; it’s happening in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois, Colorado, and more. Across the U.S., children are also staying in hospital ERs, hotels, and even out-of-state places, and some are experiencing one night “emergency” placements in foster homes. These varied situations are happening in Michigan, Montana, Georgia, Washington, West Virginia, and other states.

In this video, you'll discover some of the reasons why children are removed from their homes and placed into foster care. You'll also hear why the social safety net for working families is badly damaged. Unfortunately, due to inadequate foster care prevention spending on supports like family support and mental health services, Kansas has twice the national rate of children in foster care. Federal reimbursement changes under the Family First Act have further amplified the problem, as youth with higher needs can't easily access the right placement settings.

No child should sleep in an office – it’s wrong. In addition, no child should be removed from a safe, loving caregiver to access mental or behavioral health services.

So as states, communities, and a nation, let’s invest in child and family wellbeing and help families before crises occur.

Let’s be a national leader in foster care prevention by expanding mental health treatment access, concrete economic supports, and community-based services.

Camber Children's Mental Health hosted an enlightening two-part webinar series titled, "A Comprehensive Understanding of Childhood PTSD." This series provided attendees with critical insights into the impact of trauma on youth, exploring how early experiences of trauma can shape a child's emotional and psychological development. The webinars featured expert speakers who delved into the complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children, discussing both the symptoms and long-term effects that trauma can have on young individuals.

First Session: The first webinar of the series, found here: https://youtu.be/zw0m22Ttfk0, focuses on the assessment and diagnosis of PTSD in youth. This session breaks down the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for PTSD including risk factors and symptoms as well as reviews the assessment process in greater detail and explores common misdiagnoses.

Second Session: The second webinar, featured in this video, covers the intervention and treatment modalities proven to help youth with PTSD and shares practical strategies you can implement to reestablish feelings of safety and security. A case study is also shared to give participants a glimpse into Camber’s unique approach to treatment and the benefits of integration modalities.

Together, these webinars aim to empower attendees with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support children affected by trauma and support positive development.

Millions of people in the U.S are affected by mental illness each year—including one in five adults and one in six children ages 6 to 17. Mental illness can have significant physical, social, and financial impacts on a person’s life, but when it comes to treatment, some people are more hesitant to consider taking a medication for mental illness. Dr. Jyotsna Adma, Associate Medical Director of Psychiatry Services for KVC Hospitals joined KSHB 41 News in Kansas City to provide education about the ways psychiatric medication can improve someone’s condition and address medication misconceptions.
