Take a look inside the new Camber Mental Health - Hays location. This new inpatient hospital for youth experiencing an acute mental health crisis opened in February 2023. Within these walls, our care team works with children ages 6 to 18 to help them achieve mental wellness.

Youth in Western Kansas now have more access to these critical life-saving services at a newly designed hospital in Hays, Kansas. Adding these services will allow Camber to serve over 600 more children and teens each year who are in need of immediate stabilization and compassionate mental health treatment.

Camber Hays provides psychiatric residential treatment and inpatient mental health treatment for children who are experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, the impacts of trauma, and other mental health conditions.

Admission to a mental health hospital can be an emotional but necessary decision for parents who are concerned about their child. Most often, someone receiving this level of treatment needs professional help with severe depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, the impacts of trauma, disruptive or dangerous behaviors, or other mental health needs.

LGBTQIA+ youth are three times more likely than heterosexual youth to consider suicide. Millions of people in the U.S are affected by mental illness each year—including one in five adults and one in six children ages 6 to 17. Mental illness can have significant physical, social, and financial impacts on a person’s life, but when it comes to treatment, some people are more hesitant to consider taking a medication for mental illness. Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools and KVC Hospitals are working together to provide training to the school district staff on how to support students impacted by trauma. The training is made possible through a generous $175,000 grant awarded to KCKPS by the Wyandotte Health Foundation. Childhood trauma can leave lasting negative impacts on attention, memory, social/emotional skills and cognition, which may lead to behavioral problems in the classroom, poor attendance at school, increased drop-out rates and health issues. Creating trauma-informed schools is vital to help more students succeed and improve the overall health in the community.
