The Way Out of the Dark: A Camber Team Member’s Story of Carrying on a Legacy of Healing

A legacy of love and care can create a ripple effect that touches numerous lives. For Camber Mental Health team member Trevor Kennedy, that legacy started with the compassionate hearts and open-door policy of his grandparents. This is their story, which demonstrates the true power of being a light in the darkness.

Fostering Hope: A Light to Those in Need

Trevor’s grandparents gave their home, as well as their hearts, to children in need for over two decades as foster parents. It wasn’t about rewards or recognition. It was always about the children: providing a safe place, a warm meal and open arms to not only receive their pain, but to start the healing journey.

In their many years as foster parents, Trevor’s grandparents provided safety and stability to hundreds of children and youth in foster care. Their door was always open, their porch light always on to give those in need a way out of the dark.

The Quiet Power of Presence

It can be easy to get caught up in the idealized version of this story, but Trevor recalls that his grandparents’ home wasn’t perfect. Opening your home to children in foster care is a challenging, all-encompassing work. Trevor watched his grandparents help children heal from trauma, work through mental health challenges and safely reunite with their families. He watched them be parents, mentors, friends and more often than not, just a quiet presence.

When hard days came, as they often do, Trevor’s grandpa would say, “It’s a long way from your heart.” He was always calm and reliable in the face of difficulty, helping children discover just how resilient they truly were. loving elderly couple caring for foster kids

Both of his grandparents demonstrated incredible patience, having an immense capacity to just sit quietly with those who didn’t have the words for what they were feeling. “There was something special in that house,” says Trevor. “Sometimes subtle, sometimes slow. But always there.”

Growing up in this caring, warm environment, Trevor often didn’t see just how impactful his grandparents’ unwavering kindness was to those who received it — himself included. “To me, it was just Grandma and Grandpa being who they were,” explains Trevor. “I didn’t know then that I was witnessing the quiet power of presence, of listening and hope.”

As he grew up and moved into adulthood, Trevor began to understand. His grandparents were more than just a landing zone for those without a place to call home: they were “rebuilding trust in people who had every reason to lose it.”

Continuing the Legacy

The children who lived in their foster home were not the only ones impacted by this compassionate couple. Trevor has carried on their legacy by entering a career in mental health. “Working in mental health at Camber and welcoming people at one of the hardest moments of their lives, I find myself channeling my grandparents every single day,” shares Trevor, reflecting on how the lessons he learned from his grandparents continue to change lives long after their passing. “It’s in the way I try to make eye contact, to listen without judgment, to be a steady hand when someone’s world feels like it’s slipping through their fingers,” Trevor shares.

“I’ve seen how a small moment of care, a warm blanket, a soft tone and the simple act of remembering someone’s name can begin to light the way out of the dark.”- Trevor Kennedy, Director of Administration and Programming at Camber Hays

Initially pursuing a degree in business administration and leadership studies at Fort Hays State University, Trevor’s professional career has spanned nine years in mental health and hospital administration. He has been an integral part of programming and behavioral health at Camber Hays, now acting as the Director of Administration and Programming. His grandparents’ legacy has touched so many more than the hundreds of children they cared for. Through Trevor, their inspiring story impacts thousands every year.

Thanks to his grandparents, Trevor has learned what it looks like to believe in the goodness of others, especially when working with those who are facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Trevor knows that healing doesn’t start with a solution. It starts with someone taking the time to care and be present.
